Things to Consider Before Accepting a Job Offer

Congratulations! You worked hard on your cover letter, adjusted your resume, and aced the interview. After all that hard work you are pumped up to land the job offer.

But regardless of how pumped up you might be, you should force yourself to pump the brakes before you say yes– at least one full day. Spend this time trying to figure out if the offer is right for you. The following items should be thoroughly considered before saying ‘yes’ to a job offer.

Is the company the right cultural fit for you?

Amazing pay is great. Exciting projects are wonderful. But, if you’re truly going to be happy you need to make sure there is a good cultural fit. Take the time to learn more about the company’s core values and ensure they align with your values. Get a firm understanding of hours, requirements, training expectations and more. Make sure you get a firm grasp of the work-life balance in this role so that you aren’t surprised. If possible, talk directly with others in the role (future co-workers) and try to identify any glaring red flags. If you don’t have the opportunity to speak directly with peers, turn to Glassdoor.com and try to get a sense for what current and past employees have said about the organization.

Ask for more specifics about the person you will be replacing.

Did that person get promoted, or fired? Did that person leave the company voluntarily and if so, why? Asking these questions will give an indication of the work environment, expectations that may be placed on you, and finally may alert you to any organizational leadership challenges.

Ask about the average tenure for someone in this role.

By digging deeper here, you’ll get a great sense for both upward mobility and job stability. If people generally are promoted from this position to other areas of the company, that is a good indicator of advancement opportunities for you in the future. On the other hand, if there is a steady stream of people that leave this position and the company, take the time to find out why.

Trust your gut instincts.

When you were first offered the job did you immediately want to scream YES? If so (and you’ve addressed all the above items), then this position is probably right for you! But, if you’re second-guessing things at all, take the time to reevaluate the hours, culture, salary, leadership and more.
