As a technical recruiter here at Thompson Technologies, Tammy Kirk has the opportunity to help a range of IT professionals every day. But Tammy’s commitment to providing career advice and help to technology professionals in the Greater Atlanta Area extends beyond office hours. Tammy’s involvement with AtlantaPHP has given her the opportunity to reach even more professionals, and she has made quite an impact! It’s because of her commitment to IT professionals across the area that we are proud to announce Tammy as the first winner of the Thompson Technologies Ambassador Award. The award has been designated for an employee who gives exceptional service in liaising with a local affinity group.

Q: What does winning the Ambassador Award mean to you personally?

To me it was a huge compliment and honor to be the first recipient of the Ambassador Award. It meant a lot to be recognized for my involvement in the PHP group internally, but also because they trusted me to be a representative of Thompson Technologies within the PHP community.


Q: What inspired you to become involved with Atlanta PHP?

When I first started at Thompson Technologies, Ari quickly saw that I enjoyed going to user groups and getting to know the developers on a personal level. He asked me to find a group that we could sponsor, and that group turned out to be  AtlantaPHP.  This group was extremely well organized, as they met every month and had a sizeable group in attendance. I knew this was a good fit, so I approached the organizers, Chris Spruck, Kevin Roberts, and Nic Rosental about sponsorship.  I have been to every meeting since, and I love it!

Q: What does your involvement with AtlantaPHP entail?

Whenever there is a career or job search question within the group, I provide advice or assistance if possible. That can range from help with resumes and answering questions about hiring trends to job search advice and more. As an organization, Thompson Technologies is even more involved.

I’m also excited to announce that I recently approached group leadership about becoming a co-organizer of AtlantaPHP. In this role, my involvement with the group will span even more with additional responsibility on the group level and and assistance to AtlantaPHP members!

Q: What have you learned from technology professionals during your involvement with AtlantaPHP?

I quickly learned that user group members can be wary of recruiters. That’s because so many of them simply drop off cards and leave. I never had any intention of dropping off business cards, but it was key for me to understand how recruiters have treated them in the past. My involvement is very hands-on – I’m an active participant in the group – and that’s exactly how I’ve been able to have such a great experience in the past two years. I enjoy going to meetings and talking with developers – my involvement with AtlantaPHP isn’t like work at all, it’s something I truly enjoy!

One other thing to note: technology professionals want you to be genuinely interested in what interests them (makes sense to me!). My passion for technology and learning helped group members realize that I’m someone who is rooted in technology and that I truly want to help them wherever I can.

Q: How has Thompson Technologies supported your involvement in Atlanta PHP?

Thompson Technologies has been incredibly supportive of my involvement with AtlantaPHP. Initially, we sponsored the group itself through a financial donation. But, Thompson is much more involved, providing giveaways, bringing food from time to time, and providing videotaping of presentations to give members more tools to use in their professional development. It is great to know that Thompson supports both my involvement with AtlantaPHP, as well as the group itself!
