Hiring Truly Exceptional IT Talent when Technical Skills are in Short Supply

For the past 18 years, Thompson Technologies has remained passionate about finding truly exceptional talent. We’ve created ways to attract impactful IT consultants to your business in the past, but now have our sights set even higher.

For a long time, the IT industry was focused on hiring software engineers and other Information Technology professionals with very specific skills and tools expertise. With today’s ever-changing IT landscape, and the short supply of IT talent with niche’ skills sets, other alternatives to meeting the high demand are being explored.

One way we are helping meet that demand is by identifying candidates who are truly exceptional—who can make a dramatic impact on your business – and look at their technical capabilities, rather than just what they have or have not done. In other words, find talent with the aptitude to learn a new skill or programming language and then teach it to them. Sounds simple, right?  Yet, it’s a trend that is still very underutilized in the IT industry. There are a range of talented IT professionals who are possibly not reaching their potential within organizations, simply because no one thought to apply their current skills and capabilities to the company’s current need.

Here’s an example: At Thompson Technologies, we are seeing an increasing demand for programmers with experience using Ruby on Rails. There are not enough strong Ruby Developers “in the market” at any given time.  An excellent solution that some of our clients have employed was to have us locate strong PHP Developers who would be open to transferring their current skill set to Ruby.

Now, there certainly is time needed to train; however, you’ll end up with a highly proficient programmer with a wide range of skills – one that can make a huge impact on your productivity and  be loyal for the opportunity to expand their skill set.

Two tips.

There are a couple of things you’ll need to consider to ensure this works successfully within your organization:

  • Identify candidates to take on new skills. You may wonder how to determine which candidates are more likely to succeed in learning a new skill or expanding their knowledge base.
    • Consultant within your existing IT Team.  Learn as much about the technical foundation of your best performers as possible, and then ask how long it took them to adapt to the newer technology that is currently in use.
    • Does the candidate show an interest in emerging technologies outside the office?
    • Verify that everyone who is reviewing the resumes are on the same page to ensure that they are looking for core skills sets, versus only what the team is using now.
  • Pay fairly.  It’s important to note that compensating candidates fairly for both their background and their willingness to learn new skill sets is essential. Finding a candidate to learn new technologies is not an opportunity to cost-cut – quite the opposite. If you’ve identified a candidate who is perfect for increased skill sets and responsibilities, an appropriate compensation package will help attract and retain that potentially-impactful candidate for years to come. If you don’t demonstrate your commitment to a candidate through fair compensation, it’s highly likely that your competitor will!

Being open minded to different approaches to solving your IT resource needs can make a tremendous impact on your business. If you have questions or need help identifying impactful, exceptional talent for your business, just let us know!
