Tuesday, August 9, 2011 – David Thompson, Founder & Assistant CEO of Thompson Technologies, has always been a philanthropist and community advocate. He is actively involved in several non-profit organizations, including Orphan Concern International (OCI) – a non-profit organization dedicated to helping destitute children who have lost their parents to AIDS live a normal life.
Orphan Concern was founded in 2001 by former superintendent of Kenya, Dr. David Mwangi. OCI was established to provide education, health care and nutrition to orphans in Kenya. Since their start, they have built a primary school and have housed over 250 children. Currently, they have purchased land to build a secondary school to help further education for orphans in Kenya.
David Thompson is currently on the Board of Directors for Orphan Concern International and has been a contributor since 2006. With David’s direction and commitment to giving back, Thompson Technologies has contributed almost $25,000 to the organization. The monthly contributions, along with annual raffle donations, helped play a huge role in building OCI’s first school and giving hundreds of orphans food and shelter.
After 5 years of committed contributions and invaluable insight on the Board of Directors, David and his wife Lori traveled to Africa last month to get a first-hand look at the program Thompson has been so committed to supporting. David and Lori traveled with a group of 30 people from Marietta, GA to host a Vacation Bible School (VBS) for the children.
There were 160 students from 3rd through 8th grade that participated in VBS; David was in charge of the 7th and 8th grade boys, while Lori led arts and crafts for the week. David and Lori observed how happy and sheltered the children were despite the apparent and overwhelming poverty that surrounded them. David noted, “Being able to experience first-hand how Thompson Technologies commitment has changed lives was tremendous, but the most rewarding aspect of the trip was the opportunity to connect and create relationships with the kids.”
Orphan Concern has made a lot of progress in the past 10 years, but there are still 1 million orphans in Kenya, and more than half of them will die of AIDS before age 14. David and Thompson Technologies remains committed to diminishing this statistic.
